The history of People’s Baptist Church is one of God’s guidance and blessing. The church began in May, 1962 with 46 charter members as People’s Bible Church. Jack R. Mosher was the first pastor. At that time services were held in a rented house on Memorial Drive. No time was wasted in building new facilities. A new building was completed one year later. The church began supporting their first missionaries at this time.
John Woodley came as Pastor in 1967 and is most noted for founding Greenville Christian Academy in 1969 with 110 students from kindergarten through the fourth grade.
In 1974, Barry Bagwell was called to the church. During his tenure, the church changed its name to People’s Baptist Temple and moved to the present location. A pre-school and a bus ministry was also started.
J. M. Bragg had already served two years as music director and school principal when he assumed the pastorate. The Family Life Center was constructed, and the buildings were remodeled.
David Ralston served for three years from 1986 to 1988. The church completed 25 years of ministry, began Faith Promise Missions, and AWANA ministries before Dr. Max Barton was called in January, 1989.
Through the fundamental leadership of Pastor Barton the church and school has grown to become a multifaceted ministry that ministers to thousands daily. The church constructed a new auditorium in 1994, and added a balcony and new sound system in January, 2003 making its seating capacity 1,000 for services.
The church and school staff of 50 ministers to 425 students and over 800 active church members. The church plant sits on 19 acres with buildings valued at $10 million dollars.
